Dermatillomania is also known as - 'Neurotic excoration' & 'Self - Inflicted dermatosis'
People pick from all parts of their body, but most frequently, the face.
Fingernails are the most commonly used tools for picking, but picking with tools such as teeth, tweezers and pins is not unsual.
More than half of skin pickers also report histories of stereo typical behaviours which may include: Hair pulling, thumb sucking, body rocking, knuckle cracking, self biting or self harm, teeth grinding and cheek chewing.
The picking tends to worsen when tired or at night.
FACT
Skin picking more often occurs more in women than men.
The sensations we may feel are : Itching, Tingling, Burning and uncontrollable urges to pick.
Course of ill-ness
Usually started in adolescences or young adult - hood.
Gradual and long term.
Picking also is worse when the pickers are tense and anxious.
Having picked, most sufferers experience a sense of satisfaction or relief, as with trichotillomania (Compulsive hair pulling).
Some people may encounter an altered state while picking and not feel the pain at all.
Studies
Half the people with dermatillomania meet the criteria for OCD.
DBB - (Body Dismorphic Disorder)
On a study with 123 BDD patients 27% also skin picked.
Anxiety Disorder
56% - 65% of skin pickers were reported to be suffering from anxiety disorder.
One study showed that 71% of skin pickers met the criteria for a personality disorder.
