  Is Trichotillomania Genetic?
Posted on Friday, March 15 @ 21:47:28 GMT by Neomie

Genetics There is a lot of research suggesting that Trichotillomania is genetic.

Does hair pulling run in your family? Can you trace back a genetic link? I can say that my paternal grandfather MAY have had trich. Multiple Sclerosis certainly runs in my family but I don't think there's a connection there. Please leave a message here if you have a family member who has trich. This will help in our research.

My Aunt Laurel (my Mother's sister) has trich much worse than I do. She pulls from her scalp. I only pull from lashes and brows.
Please, if you have any info on this topic, let me know. I have a son that I'm concerned about.

Neomie, My paternal grandmother may have pulled her hair out, I remember my father saying something about this long ago. I am not sure if it had anything to do with trich though. I am very interested in this though because I have three children and am constantly worried they may be inflicted with trich at some point. I have noticed them playing with their hair and it worries me. Cathy

I have absolutely no idea if any of my family members suufer from Trich. There is a lot of depression running through both sides of my family, acute, clinical. Its not something anyone would talk about or be willing to talk about in my family.
Strangely enough I found out last week an uncle of mine actually removed all his own teeth. For what reason I dont know.

I am not aware of anyone else in my family having trich but i am concerned that i may be the one that starts the link. As a mother of four children (two of them chew and play with their hair) my biggest fear is that they may develop trich.

To everyone with children, my heart goes out to you because I worried that my own daughter would develop trich. She didn't. She's beautiful with long flowing hair and a heart of gold.

Please don't stress yourselves over this issue. It hardly ever seems to be passed down directly to the next generation and it seems you're more likely to have a sibling or a grandparent with trich than a parent or child.

I hope that helps. I really don't want to start hysteria here, merely to gather data.

With warmth and calming vibes to all,
Neomie

My mother was adopted and only found her parents when I was about 20. By this stage I had been pulling for about 9 years. It later came out that her mother had also been a hair puller.
It could be a coincidence? I really have no idea how many people do this.

Hope this is of interest.

ps. thankyou for putting so much effort into this site. This is the first time I have ever looked for any help, and i find it reassuring to know that there are other people in the same position and that I am not so much of a freak.

Hi there,
I was told that my father used to pull his hair and eat it when he was around 3 years old. But then my grandmother would beat him up till he stopped (those were the days!).
I am not sure that this was trich or something else. Later, he developed serious depression and has alcohol problems.
This topic is really interesting. I do not have children yet but I would not like them to have trich.
For those who have kids already and are worried: maybe you should think that even if your kids develop trich it will be a less stressful experience for them than for us had been because you, their parents will be able to help!
Love,
Reka

Maybe it can be Genetic as my sister has Trich also. She started pulling at the same age as me which was around 14 years old.Luckily for her,her hair is very thick so it does'nt show. For the first time we discussed this a few weeks back and it was really good to talk to her about it.It was quite amazing how open and honest she was,a total contrast to how I am, as I always feel quite embarassed. We also suffer from an eating disorder which started about a year prior to having Trich.I wonder if these are related in some way?Anyways I hope this helps your research?!Take care.TashaxxxxxxxxxP.s Sending Super Happy Pull Free Vibes at ya!!!!!

I am wondering if my trich may be related to the fact that I am a muscular dystrophy carrier, which means I have a large chunk of one of my genes missing?
There are no other hair pullers in my family.

I think there are definitely genetic links of some sort - my Dad has said in passing that he 'used to do something similar', and my sister is a skin picker, always has been since childhood. Also we both had scabs on our scalps as children that we used to pick off, and I think we both used to save them under the bed! Interesting that my hotspots now are in the same places as the scabs were, though didn't start pulling until 10 yrs later.
Wonder about the whole nature / nurture thing - Mum thrives on illnesses etc (to get attention and to feel needed I think) and I remember an obsession with 'cradle cap' when i was very young - and head lice come to think of it - lots of shampooing, vigorous combing and scratching scalps - any link? Or just a link to some emotional tenseness with Mum that nobody can put their finger on? Who knows? just rambling now!!
In conclusion, think genetic element somwhere, but also think need a trigger in both cause and maintenance.

Absolutely! My niece does it & she lives 1500 miles away, so I know she didn't get it from me. I know what you mean about worrying about my kids (I have 4). That's been a very big worry since they were born. I think the power of suggestion is very strong. Two of my girls have it mildly. I've had it since I was 10. My brother (father of my niece who does it) did for a few teenage years.
Unfortunately, I think it will be debilitating for my niece, because she's only 8 & it's getting bad.

I believe there is definitely a genetic trait towards TTM. My grandmother had both OCD and TTM. She passed both of these on to my mother, who in turn passed it on to me. We all act alike and have many of the same odd habits. I am unsure as to whether anyone else in my family has TTM, but I am positive my dad's side (accounting my father's total misunderstanding of why I was pulling - he thought it was for attention) has no occurence of TTM.

I find the whole genetics issue intriguing, for sure, but after some basic research in the family, none of my relatives have ever suffered from trich, but it had to start somewhere and I'm the first in the family. I certainly hope it's not tho', I'd feel terrible if my little girl started pulling.

Both my mother and younger sister have trich, although they won't admit it. In fact, my mother was the one who STARTED pulling my hair out at an early age stating "I need to pull the thick ones out" and then I took over shortly thereafter. Perhaps she passed her stress(stressors) onto me?

Maybe... My cousin might have had trich when he was little. When he was somewhere between 3 and 5, he would ask other people to pull out his hair for him. He told them that it felt good, but apparently he never pulled it out himself. He is in his late 30's to early 40's now I suppose. *I got this info from my mom of course... :)*

My mother has had trichotillomania since she was about eight, after severe trauma. I never understood it until I was about twelve, when I started doing the same thing. High amounts of stress, trauma, and apprehension are our downfall when it comes to pulling, so I think that personality may have more to do with it han genetics.

I have been pulling my hair since I was 13 years old. I had been told other family members may have also pulled, but never to the extreme that I did. Just recently I found out my half sister who is now 9 years old, also pull, but in different places. I thought it interesting someone mentioned having Multiple Sclerosis in the family, because my half sister and I share the same father who has MS. It has been mentioned that some of our aunts on my dad's side of the family also pulled.

Hi Neo!
If you look at my family tree, you would definitely say that it is genetic. I have pulled lashes/brows since I was 11, I'm 32... My mother pulls her eyelashes, her mother pulled her brows and I have found several cousins (all on my Mother's side) who pull their lashes. All of us are women. My fear is that my son will do this, but if I look at my family history, it would appear that he is of the wrong sex.... Very scary, though!!!

I know for a fact that my aunt (my mother's sister) has/had trich. I have a strong suspicion that my dad has something similar, he's got a twitchy-nervous thing going' on that I can't put my finger on it.

I can definatly trace a genetic path of depression, though, and I think that if I were able to talk to my relatives more candidly I might find more with trich.
