New research from Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, USA shows that only half of US primary care patients with an anxiety disorder receive any treatment for it. I would suggest the figures were much lower.
Risa Weisberg and her team studied the psychiatric treatment received by 539 primary care patients with at least one anxiety disorder and noted that patients treated for anxiety disorders received the same sort of care from both primary care physicians and psychiatrists.
47.3% of the patients studied had anxiety disorders which had gone untreated. Around 21% were only receiving medication for their anxiety problems, 7.2% were in psychotherapy only, and 24.5% were receiving both medication and psychotherapy.
Patients, they discovered, were more likely to receive mental health treatment if their symptoms were severe and caused functional impairment or major depression.
Shockingly, members of racial and ethnic minorities were less likely to be treated than others.
Individuals who had been prescribed medication were less likely to also receive psychotherapy if treated by a primary care physician than by a psychiatrist.
In the American Journal of Psychiatry, Weisberg et al report that their findings suggests a "lack of communication" between the primary care physician and the patient," and startlingly, they also suggest that "some of the barriers to effective treatment lie within the patients, rather than the primary care doctor."
In conclusion, the researchers recommend patient education. .
We would respectfully suggest that it is very difficult for someone without a disorder like ours, to understand the emotions behind it, if they don’t take the time to listen rather than medicate.
